Simply Unbearable

Children under five dying every year from preventable diseases

image

Nearly 1,000 children under the age of five died today in Latin America and the Caribbean. In countries like Peru and the Bahamas and Venezuela and Mexico and Costa Rica. Countries where you may have visited or studied or made friends or have family.

Every year, 330,000 children in Latin America and the Caribbean never live to see their fifth birthday.

Their deaths leave mothers, families, and communities distressed and anxious about the future.

The simply unbearable fact is that many of these young children die from diseases that can be prevented. Respiratory diseases like pneumonia or influenza. Or diarrhea that causes dehydration.

Preventable diseases such as measles and malaria. Or infections that mothers or newborns may contract in hospitals or other health care settings.
